INDIVIDUAL THERAPY IN NORTH CAROLINA, SOUTH CAROLINA AND ONLINE

Individual therapy offers private, one-on-one support for children, adolescents and adults. Anew U Counseling Services provides individual counseling through therapists serving Raleigh, Durham, Charlotte and Waxhaw, North Carolina; Columbia, South Carolina; and eligible telehealth clients.

Therapy is personalized to your needs, goals, age and life experiences. Your therapist will work with you to understand what is happening, identify patterns that may be keeping you stuck and develop practical strategies for healing, growth and healthier daily functioning.

Reasons People Begin Individual Therapy

People seek therapy for many different reasons. You do not need to wait until a concern becomes a crisis. Individual therapy may help with:

  • Anxiety, worry, fear or panic
  • Depression and mood changes
  • Trauma and post-traumatic stress
  • Grief and loss
  • Stress, burnout or anger
  • Low self-esteem or negative beliefs
  • Relationship or family concerns
  • Parenting challenges
  • Major life transitions
  • School, work or academic pressure
  • Substance-use concerns
  • Difficulty setting boundaries
  • Personal growth and emotional wellness

The concerns addressed, age groups served and treatment approaches used vary by therapist. Our administrative team can help identify a clinician whose experience and availability fit your needs.

Individual Therapy for Children and Adolescents

Anew U serves clients as young as age 4 when an appropriate therapist is available. Therapy for children and adolescents may include developmentally appropriate conversation, play-based interventions, expressive activities, coping-skills practice and caregiver involvement.

Parents and caregivers may participate in treatment planning or selected sessions when clinically appropriate. The therapist will explain confidentiality, communication and caregiver involvement based on the young person’s age and treatment needs.

Individual Therapy for Adults

Adult therapy can provide space to understand emotions, process difficult experiences, strengthen relationships and make meaningful changes. Sessions may focus on immediate concerns, long-standing patterns or a combination of both.

Your therapist will collaborate with you on treatment goals and recommend approaches based on your needs. Depending on the clinician and treatment plan, services may incorporate cognitive behavioral therapy, person-centered therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, motivational interviewing, trauma-focused approaches, Brainspotting or EMDR therapy.

What to Expect

Your first appointment focuses on learning about your concerns, history, strengths and goals. You and your therapist will discuss recommended next steps and develop an individualized treatment plan.

Therapy is collaborative. You may talk through experiences, learn coping or communication skills, practice emotional-regulation strategies and work toward specific changes between sessions. The pace and length of treatment depend on your goals, clinical needs and progress.

In-Person and Telehealth Appointments

Individual therapy may be available in person through our Raleigh, Durham, Charlotte and Waxhaw offices in North Carolina and our Columbia office in South Carolina. Secure telehealth may also be available when the therapist is authorized to practice in the state where the client is physically located.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know whether individual therapy is right for me?

Individual therapy may be appropriate when you want private support focused on your own emotions, experiences, behaviors or goals. During the initial appointment, the therapist will assess your needs and discuss whether individual, couples, family or another service is the best fit.

Do you offer therapy for children and teenagers?

Yes. Anew U serves children and adolescents when a therapist with the appropriate experience and availability is available. The minimum age and services offered vary by clinician.

Can individual therapy be provided through telehealth?

Yes, when telehealth is clinically appropriate and the therapist is authorized to practice where the client is physically located. Privacy, technology, age, safety and treatment needs are considered before remote services are recommended.

How often will I attend therapy?

Many clients begin with weekly or biweekly appointments, but frequency is individualized. Your therapist will recommend a schedule based on your needs, goals, availability and insurance requirements.
