COUPLES AND FAMILY THERAPY IN NORTH CAROLINA, SOUTH CAROLINA AND ONLINE

Relationships can be a source of strength, but communication problems, conflict and major life changes can leave couples and families feeling disconnected. Anew U Counseling Services offers couples and family therapy through clinicians serving Raleigh, Durham, Charlotte and Waxhaw, North Carolina; Columbia, South Carolina; and eligible telehealth clients.

Therapy provides a supportive setting to understand relationship patterns, communicate more effectively and work toward healthier connections. The therapist does not take sides. Instead, the focus is on the relationship, shared goals and the changes each participant can make.

Couples Therapy

Couples therapy helps partners address concerns affecting their connection, trust and communication. You may seek support during a difficult period or use therapy proactively to strengthen the relationship.

Couples therapy may help partners work through:

  • Recurring conflict or communication breakdowns
  • Emotional distance or difficulty connecting
  • Trust concerns
  • Intimacy concerns
  • Parenting or co-parenting disagreements
  • Premarital or commitment questions
  • Separation, divorce or relationship transitions
  • Stress related to work, health, finances or extended family
  • Grief, trauma or other experiences affecting the relationship

The therapist will learn about each partner’s perspective, identify interaction patterns and help the couple practice healthier ways of responding to one another.

Family Therapy

Family therapy supports family members who want to improve communication, navigate change or address patterns affecting the household. Depending on the treatment goals, sessions may include the whole family or selected family members.

Family therapy may help with:

  • Parent-child or caregiver-child conflict
  • Adolescent behavioral or emotional concerns
  • Parenting challenges
  • Blended-family adjustments
  • Major transitions, moves or changes in family roles
  • Grief and loss
  • Separation or divorce
  • Communication and boundary concerns
  • Stress related to a family member’s mental-health needs
  • Rebuilding connection after conflict

The therapist will consider each family member’s needs, age, role and perspective while helping the family work toward shared goals.

Approaches to Couples and Family Therapy

Treatment is individualized based on the relationship, concerns and clinician’s training. Sessions may use emotionally focused therapy, cognitive behavioral strategies, person-centered therapy, solution-focused therapy, communication-skills practice or other evidence-based approaches.

The therapist may help participants recognize negative cycles, identify underlying emotions, practice listening and repair skills, clarify expectations and develop practical agreements for daily life.

What to Expect

The first appointment focuses on understanding the relationship or family concerns, relevant history, strengths and goals. The therapist will also explain confidentiality, participation expectations and how information will be handled when more than one person is involved in treatment.

Some sessions may include all participants, while others may involve selected family members when clinically appropriate. Your therapist will discuss the recommended format and how progress will be reviewed.

Couples or family therapy may not be appropriate in every circumstance. The therapist will assess safety, readiness and whether another service or level of care is needed.

In-Person and Telehealth Appointments

Couples and family therapy may be available in person through our Raleigh, Durham, Charlotte and Waxhaw offices in North Carolina and our Columbia office in South Carolina. Secure telehealth may also be available when the therapist is authorized to practice where each participating client is physically located.

Insurance and Scheduling

Insurance coverage for couples and family therapy depends on the plan, service, diagnosis, clinician and identified client. Relationship counseling is not covered by every plan. Our administrative team will verify available benefits, but verification is not a guarantee of payment.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between couples therapy and family therapy?

Couples therapy focuses primarily on the relationship between partners. Family therapy may involve parents, children, siblings or other family members and focuses on patterns affecting the family system. The therapist will recommend the format that best fits the treatment goals.

Does every family member have to attend each session?

Not always. Participation depends on the concerns, goals, ages of the participants and treatment plan. The therapist may recommend sessions with the full family, selected members or caregivers.

Can couples and family therapy be provided through telehealth?

Yes, when telehealth is clinically appropriate and the therapist is authorized to practice where every participating client is physically located. Privacy, safety, technology and the ability to participate meaningfully are considered before remote sessions are recommended.

Will insurance cover couples or family therapy?

Coverage varies. Some plans cover family or couples sessions only when treatment is medically necessary for an identified client and plan requirements are met. Benefits and clinician participation must be verified before scheduling.

What if my partner or family member does not want to attend?

You may still benefit from individual therapy focused on your own responses, boundaries, communication and relationship goals. Review our Individual Therapy page or contact our administrative team for help choosing an appropriate service.
